Izzy Butcher explores how sewing in view of the natural world can boost mental wellbeing and have life-changing benefits
We’ve been inspired by series 8 of the Great British Sewing Bee to make our own denim shirt transformation project! This clever shirt upcycling project by Debbie Wainhouse is a brilliant way to give an old shirt a fresh new look. All you need is a denim shirt, a bandana and some basic sewing kit.
This is a really great way to upcycle an old shirt that you might otherwise throw away. If there are any tears or damage on the front of the shirt, it can be easily hidden away underneath the bandana. We love the feel of this upcycled shirt. It’s easy to imagine it being worn by a country music star such as Dolly Parton!
There are plenty of ways to adapt this project to suit your style or your needs. Debbie has put together seven top tips for you to try:
This project first appeared in Simply Sewing Magazine. Simply Sewing is a practical magazine for people who sew or want to learn. It’s packed with beautiful projects to sew and expert workshops to boost your sewing skills.

Cut your bandana/scarf in half so you can use one half for each side of the front of your shirt. If it’s not big enough use two scarves or mix and match.

Remove any pockets from the shirt carefully with your stitch ripper. Pockets that have been in place for a long time may have weaker fabric underneath the stitching so unpick carefully to avoid cutting a hole.

Fold and press a hem on one of the long sides of your bandana/scarf and place this along the placket of the shirt so that right sides (RS) are facing with the scarf facing away from the side of the shirt it will cover.

Pin and stitch this in place then press to the right side.
Using the seams of the shirt as a guide, carefully cut away the excess fabric, leaving yourself a hem of approx. 5mm (¼in) and fold this under and press.

Topstitch the bandana all the way around using a matching thread. Use a longer stitch length for an authentic look (we used a stitch length of 2.8). You might like to use a contrasting thread for this, if so stitch carefully as this stitching will be extra noticeable!

Repeat this process for the other side of the shirt.

You’re all done! We hope you enjoyed this fun shirt upcycling project.
