This project was created by Mollie for Mollie Makes magazine – for more easy-make craft projects and creative inspiration, subscribe to Mollie or click here to find out more.

Christmas embroidery motifs

Use our library of embroidery stitches to master all the stitches in these Christmas embroidery motifs.

You will need

  • Thread
  • Linen
  • Transfers

Method

Transferring a pattern

1

Print or trace your chosen motifs onto the water-soluble stabiliser, then peel off the backing and stick it onto the fabric. Stitch through the fabric and stabiliser, and when you’re all finished soak the embroidery to dissolve the stabiliser. You can also use a transfer pen (follow the manufacturer’s instructions) or trace the design onto the fabric with a water-soluble pen or a finely sharpened pencil.

Hooping the Fabric

1

Separate the two pieces of the embroidery hoop, then place the inner hoop on a flat surface and lay the fabric over the hoop. Loosen the screw on the outer hoop slightly, then press over the fabric and inner hoop. Tighten the screw to hold the tension on the fabric. Now you can start stitching.
