In this tutorial, we will show you exactly how to put together this fab banner in just 6 easy steps, which you can find below. You’ll also find a free template to get your project started, along with a list of all the materials you’ll need! Once you have finished, you will just have to decide what to do with it. It would make a wonderful birthday gift for any adventure-loving kids out there.

Embroidered wall hanging fact box:

Cotton fabric: 50x55cm, light grey; 24x40cm, patterned
Felt fabric: 10x10cm, blue, purple, turquoise and white
Stranded cotton: 1 skein each of blue, metallic gold, green, magenta, purple, turquoise and white
Embroidery hoop: 13cm diameter
Bondaweb
Dowel rod and cord (to hang)
Tassel: x2, green and magenta
Sewing machine (optional)
Basic embroidery kit

Free embroidered wall hanging template

You’ll also need the free embroidered wall hanging template.

You will need:

Cotton fabric
Felt
Stranded cotton
Embroidery hoop
Bondaweb
Dowel
Tassel
Basic embroidery kit
Sewing machine (Optional)

Step 1

Copy and cut out of all the templates. Using the banner template, cut out two upper panels from the light grey fabric and two lower panels from the patterned. Trace the mountains, snowy peaks and peak reflections onto the corresponding felt, back with Bondaweb and cut out.

Step 2

Place the turquoise felt in your hoop and draw around the lake template. Create the stars in Backstitch and the moon in Brick Stitch using metallic gold. Fuse the snowy peak reflections in place on the lake. Then, fuse Bondaweb to the back of the turquoise felt and cut out around the lake.

Step 3

Transfer the lettering, moon and stars to the front upper panel. Mount in a hoop. Work the lettering in Whipped Backstitch using magenta. Use metallic gold to Backstitch the stars and use Brick Stitch for the moon.

Step 4

Fuse your felt pieces to the upper front panel, starting with the blue mountain, then the purple mountain, both snowy peaks, and then the lake. Then, work Blanket Stitch around the felt with a corresponding thread colour. Backstitch the trees using green. Add three tents in magenta, purple and turquoise using Satin Stitch and outline them with Backstitch. Add French Knots to the woodland area in magenta, purple, turquoise and blue. Add grass in Straight Stitch in metallic gold.

Step 5

Place your upper and lower front panels together, RS facing each other, and sew together with a 1.5cm seam. Repeat with your back panels and press seams open. Place the front and back of your banner together, RS facing each other, and stitch around with a 1.5cm seam, leaving a 4cm gap along the top. Turn through, then ladder stitch the gap.

Step 6

Fold the top of the banner over by 3cm and slip stitch in place, sewing through the back panel only. Insert the dowel rod and attach your cord. Finish with two tassels.
