Sewing Bee runner-up Yasmin: ‘It was overwhelming and tiring but I have no regrets’

What a finale! The Great British Sewing Bee came to a close last night, with Caz winning the title of Britain’s best amateur sewist. The competition was tight and all three semi-finalists have made some fantastic garments throughout the whole series.

We’re catching up with runner-up Yasmin to discover the highs and lows of the sewing room.

There were some new themes in this series – is there any particular week you enjoyed or found tricky during your time on Sewing Bee?

I found kids’ week so hard to prepare for as I have never sewn for kids before. I completely over-complicated the sizing and drove myself to a panic before the Made to Measure. 

Best and worst moments overall for you during the series?

My Garment of the Week win in episode 9 is easily my proudest moment of the series. I am so pleased the judges could see my vision and were happy with my execution of the dress. I am over the moon that I completed the hat, as I think it added an extra element that lifted my design.

My worst moment was the Made to Measure in the final. I didn’t have the time to practice and so everything that could have gone wrong (and I would have fixed on the drafted pattern prior to filming) went wrong! It’s hard to end on such a low point, but I am still proud that I made it into the final.

Would you encourage other amateur sewers out there to have a go on the series and why?

I would absolutely encourage anyone who sews to apply to the show. The experience was overwhelming and tiring, but I have no regrets about my decision to apply. I never in a million years thought I was good enough at sewing to even make it on the show – it could happen to any of us!

Will you make anything from the series again when you are at home and have more time?

I want to remake my finale Made to Measure, I wish I could have fit it nicely to my partner and am so disappointed in the execution.

I also would like to finish the hem of my Versace dress so my partner can wear it in the future.

Do you feel you have progressed now as a sewer? 

I am so much more open to challenging myself with my sewing now, I feel like I can give anything a decent attempt now. Especially when I am not being timed and filmed when trying new things!

How emotional were you when you had to leave the sewing room, and how supportive was everyone?

I was ready to leave the sewing room when the final came around. I am so honored to have been able to have my mum and brother with me when I left. They are both so special to me and I am glad I could share a small part of this experience with them.

What will you take away from your experience of being on The Great British Sewing Bee?

I am not as bad at sewing as I thought!

What is next for you in the sewing world as far as you know?

I don’t really ever share my sewing with anyone other than friends and family, as I don’t have much of an online presence. I hope to maybe post some of my makes in future, to share my ideas and creative process with others.
